Kansas City WW Show Breakfast

Bill Ward

>We had a great gathering of WoodCentral gang for breakfast on Saturday morning before the Kansas City woodworking show. We had eleven join us this year with people coming from Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas. Many of them attended last year, so it was good to see them again. We also had a couple of new faces.

Ernie brought a box of goodies for show and tell.

Time flew and at 10:30, someone finally said are we going to the show??

Ernie, Roger and I played hookey from the big show and hit three other KC woodworking establishments. A few dollars were spread around to improve the Kansas City economy. I'm heading back to the big show today (Sunday) for a last run.

Hope some of the other WoodCentral people can get together like this. It's really fun to meet these people face-to-face. We'll do it again next year!!

>It was an excellent time, I really enjoyed it. I am afraid that you guys pushed me down the slippery hand tool slope though.

I've had a Lie-Nielsen plane in my hands twice now at Woodcraft.

Maybe I can host a get together this summer when the weather is nicer.

>Sorry I could not make it down to KC early enough for your breakfast. But I did make it down to Turn About Wood by 10 AM. Loren Moseley of the KC Woodcarvers was there from 10 to 1:30 demonstrating and discussing wood carving tool sharpening. I had him fix three of my tools and my pocket knife. And bought his carving tool sharpening book he published in 1991. Well worth the drive for the valuable information and demonstrations.

Then I made it down to the Taco Bell close to the woodworking show by about 2:30. And met and talked to an old guy with white beard and overalls at the restauarant for about a half hour. I just kind of figured he had been to the wood show. So I walked up and asked him how it was. He said it was shoulder to shoulder people and he was in line at 10AM and did not get into the show area until 10:45AM. He compalined about the Zylis aluminum multi use carving vise being $249 for the total package and then said he bought one brand new at a yard sale for $10. Reminded me of the folks on this forum.

I went to the show from 3 to 6PM. It was enough to see the stuff I wanted to see. Steven Russell and Kelly Mehler and a few others were giving demos all day long. That would have been nice to see. I thought the KC show was pretty good and might get back next year or the year after. Or maybe Minneapolis.

>I sure enjoyed meeting everyone for breakfast before the K.C. WW show. What a treat to talk to folks with such a wealth of knowledge. I could have sat there and yacked all day. I want to send a special thanks to Ernie for the generous bundles of oak he brought for me, I will put it to good use :^) . I am now in a search for a post drill. Roger is pursuasive and sold me on the idea of having a post drill and then put me in line behind two other folks as he comes across them. I can't wait :^) . Once again, I can't tell you all how much fun it was to talk wood and tools. What a great group of guys!! Let me know when we can get together again. We need to pick a place and have a show and tell or handsaw sharpening clinic or something. The possibilities are endless.

Well, I stood in line at the show for about five minutes. I felt like a cow in line to get into the barn, so I left. I know I missed some good stuff, but I will survive.

I will now retire to the shop for a cold evening with my rat and build a new magazine holder.

>I would not be surprised if we passed each other in the doorway. I think I left about 1:30 to 2:00 or so. Loren Moseley was still there eating his lunch. The carving tool instruction was well worth the drive down, even without the show. I'm glad both were on the same day.

>I'm not sure you missed too much. Unless you really wanted to see lots and lots and lots of power tools on display. Then you missed a lot. I think I saw one place selling some hand tools. And Craft Supplies USA was there. So I bought some turning stuff I "needed".

Other than the Kelly Mehler and Steven Russell demonstrations, I saw everything I wanted to see in the three hours I was at the show. It would have been nice to sit through all of Kely and Steven's presentations if I had been in town.
