Shooting Crown miters

Moses Yoder in White Pigeon, MI

>Pull! oh yeah, not that kind of shooting; I think you know what I mean. I'm about done cleaning up my $20 #358 mitre box with the original sweetheart saw and legible etch, (saw made by Disston for Stanley) and am wondering if there is a shooting board made for crown mitering. I am really regretting not buying Cooper's mitre trimmer last summer, and am debating designing and building of my own. For an outside corner on crown molding, either the plane or the molding would have to be held at a funky angle; any thoguhts?

>I'm not sure if I can explain this but I'll try. Lay your crown molding back side against a 90* angle so the flats on the back lay flat against the sides of the angle. You need to make a piece of wood that will fill the space left over on the inside of the angle. Use that piece of wood as a backer in your shooting board.

I've never tried this so I'm not sure if it will work but it sounds reasonable. Hope this helps.---Jack
