Weekend Projects

Ernie Miller Topeka

>This is going to be a fun one! I having breakfast with some of this boards finest members in the morning and then it is off to the wood show and or some local tool stores. I'll be bringing my LV 112 for all of them who hasen't see one in person. I don't realy think I will be in the purchasing mode but who knows. Then it is off to dinner with the wife and friends. We broker reservations at several resturants here in town. lots of fun and adds to the tool budget. ( hope it is cold or nasty) sunday I will be chopping dove tails on drawers for the too chest. I still don't know what is going in all of these drawers maybe I should do more some rust hunting? How do you all store you egg beaters? Hang them or put them in a drawer? Every one have a ROCKIN GOOD WEEKEND!!!

Storing eggbeaters

Davy Barr

>This is a source of frustration for me too. My eggbeaters just don't hang well on pegboard. They're shaped too awkwardly. How about pics of various ways to store the little, beloved rascals.

>I have built this little rack that hangs on the wall and fits the handle. I hope to have one for every size bit up to 1/4" some day. I'm still short 3-4 or 6 but Life is to short to waist it changing bits.

>Ernie,

Have a great time at the Show! I'm still beat. Just got back from a sunny Carribean vacation and work has been beating me up. Almost time to go on vacation again! Don't you feel sorry for me??!?!

I won't be doing too much woodworking this weekend. Have to spend time with my Valentine!

She did let me out of the house to play for a bit last night though. The local Woodworking club arranged for a tour of Lee Valley.

Great tour! Steve, the Director of R+D took us through the design process. Then it was off to see the manufacturing facilities. I don't think I have ever seen so many shoulder planes, #4's or tenon cutters.

As for this weekends shop time, I will be working with some Rough Cherry, and play with a new Panel Raiser!

Have a great one, eh!

Brad

Re: Storing Eggbeaters, Braces and Electric Drills

William Duffield on the Cohansey

>I have extended a tip I learned here. I installed a row of screw hooks in the bottom edge of a ceiling joist. Then I chuck an eye bolt in each drill and hang the eyebolt from a screw hook. When I take one down to use it, I loosen the chuck and rehang the eye bolt on the screw hook, so I don't lose it.

Darrell in Oakville

>I only have 4 hand drills in my shop, so I built a small rack for them. Simple stuff, some dowel and a scrap of pine slapped on a hunk of plywood. But it makes for a zero rummage-factor when I need a drill.

This weekend I have to finish shaping the second pair of legs and true up the ends of the coopered panels for the little sleigh bed I'm building. Walnut is a really nice wood to work with hand tools.

dowels as hangers

Jack from Maine

>I find myself using dowels alot in the hanging of tools. They are cheap fasteners, easy to install and they don't mar your tools.---Jack

>I think I may get a full weekend of woodworking in.Lots to do. I'm going to start making up working drawings for a new project-LOML's Walnut 6 board blanket chest. I think this is going to be a fun project.

Plus, more shop construction. I need to start on an under the bench cabinet.I bought Jim Tolpin's Toolbox Book for inspiration. Actually Ernie's progress reports put the fire under me on this one.I have to decide on design, wood species. At least the size needs no decision. It has to fit under my benchtop between the legs. I'm thinkin of using yellow birch for the drawer fronts. I have enough of that on hand.

Have a gratifying weekend everyone and please be careful(sorry to hear about your injury Scott).---Jack

Re: NUTZ!

William Duffield on the Cohansey

>I just went out to the shop, to find the fuel tank empty, and a forecast of cold weather for the weekend. The gas company has a hard time finding their phone before Monday morning, much less finding the Cohansey, so it looks like I'll be rewiring the house for DSL instead of making sawdust this weekend. That's good news, because I'll eventually be able to ditch AOL, but it also means updating my cookies and a bunch of other people's address books, and moving several megabytes of woodworking project, tool and benchdog pictures to somewhere else in cyberspace.

Continuing on porch railings

Bill Houghton, Sebastopol, CA

>I hope to finish planing the railings, and start cutting the balusters. Electrons will be dying for this part of the project.

I also have to get into my auto-mechanic mode. I found out today that Gunter, my trusty 1984 Volvo, has sprung a leak in the radiator, so I'll be doing that, and replacing the oil filter on Earl the 1972 Chevy truck (new motor, and the oil filter loosened up, something I've never seen before; I suspect the mechanic failed to tighten it properly).
