Help with pricing of planes

art Liebeskind

>I have some semi-vintage Stanley planes in very good shape. Most are about 30 to 40 years old which makes them towards the end of real quality production, They range from a long jointer down thru the numbers to I think a number 3?. Actually as follows :

#3 needs some wiping and cleanup

#7 Jointer(England made)

#5 England made

#6 US Made

$4 US with Hock blade

#249

#79 in box

#78 England

#71P England(Router in Box)

#60-1/2 Maroon color metal

#271 Router English

#92 Rabbet Metal

Beautiful Bailey transition 18" Long(wood and metal mechanism)

Anyways I am sticking to a few german woodies , a few Lie Nielsens and a few fine Lee Valleys. Whjere can I get a feel for value and where to sell them. They are all in fine shape. Please give me an idea of fair value(to me and to the buyer)

>EBAY!

It's the spot-market price guide to the world.

Be sure and search completed auctions and take condition into account.

Look for the hump in the bell-curve of prices and you'll have as good an idea of market value as you can get.

>I've bought a number of planes on Ebay. One thing I always keep in mind when bidding is the shipping costs. IMHO this keeps the price of most items on Ebay somewhat lower than a direct sales exchange might achieve.

I've never been to a flea market to make a comparison so that will be the next step.

>Art,

first off you have to know what you have, especially for the US Stanleys. Below is a link for a good easy plane dating guide. Then pick up a copy of Walter's 2003 Stanley price giude. Don't go by the prices they list but it will give you a better idea of what is desirable. then go on the bay and compare their prices..then go to a couple of fleas and check out their prices...Then go to a few anteek mauls for their prices. Somewhere in the middle of all that is the epiphany and you will see the horizon slowly receding behind you as you start the long slide down the slipperiest of slopes.

>Your prices seemed low but w/o condition it's hard to tell.. However I checked ebay and within the last 2 weeks(of course condition makes a big difference too) here are some pricing ranges:

#92 - AU 117.50$ (sold last week)

#3 - 50-76$ USD

#5 - 35-50$ USD (lower end cause it's English)

#6 - 60-90$ USD

#79 - 40-60$ USD (higher side since it's in box)

#71p - 30-50$ USD (probably low - not great sellers)

#271 - 40$USD (not as common but not in demand)

#7 - 50-60$ USD (English reduces price)

#249 -- is no such thing I don't think. It's not Patrick Leach's site either. You sure it's not a 289 or 248 -- 289's go high, like anywhere from 90-250$ USD depending on condition and completeness. A 248 is around 50$ USD or less. Not to much in demand.

Very interesting. Want to share some of your tricks that wouldn't be obvious (such as simply doing a search on completed items)? How do you handle selling price history?

Thanks,

Pam
