>...for jointing wide boards.

The base (more next posting) is 18mm laminate - fairly stiff - 1800mm long

The top is 8mm ply - 1400mm long

It was important to me to have an overhang at either end. The shooting boards I have used in the past are too short and this makes it difficult to control the plane when jointing.

I could have chosen the grain orientation better... but that was the way the cookie crumbled.

I confess to using my FESTOOL router with the FESTOOL guide rail to make the reference edge.

This is the shooting board from the top...

I used 'any old scrap' I found in the stap bin.

I placed cork 'feet' under the base to avoid scoring my workbench.

I have not been able to implement the 'embedded' clamp slots at the rear of the board yet... hence securing the workpiece is still a little primitive... but it works well.

>The jointed maple is glued up with Rob Lees (Lee Valley) excellent fish glue... somewhat sloppy (my 'workmate' was generous with the glue) and also somewhat overclamped... as the joints are almost 'gas tight'! Please excuse the provisional bench covering... I am in pursuit of an alternative (linoleum??).

The bookshelves are in progress... so that Suzanne can put 'all your woodworking books' in a safe place!...i.e. out of her way! ;-))

I hope you enjoyed the 'exposee'.

>>> the 2nd '#7' posting is in reality '#8'.

The stain along the reference edge of the shooting board is wax. It makes up somewhat for the poor grain orientation of the base board.

>Conger,

Looks like a simple yet effective shooting board. Good show!

What prevents your plane from cutting into the 8mm reference line board?

Love your Yorkie bench dog.

>Hi Conger,

Nice work and a very nice set up--would make a nice advert for LN, Bessey, and Ulmia.

Could you tell us a bit about the wood you're using, and also the readily available hardwoods there in Munich. Is that Norway maple you are using? What are the readily available and affordable domestic hardwoods available to you for cabinetry? I'm assuming you can buy just about anything from anywhere in the world, but am curious about the standard domestic timbers.

One other thing--wood sizing. You listed some wood sizes. 18mm and 50mm, I believe. Are those standard thicknesses which are available to you?

Thanks, and a great project! Wiley

>Hi Todd (O'Callaghan?),

The 8mm ply is jjjust so that the LN #9 blade covers it by 1mm - i.e. takes off the top veneer. That is not a problem as the board and the plane go together... and so the 're-usability' is covered.

Re: I made a shooting board... question

CONGER - The Irish diaspora in Munich

>Hi Todd (O'Callaghan??),

The 8mm ply is 1mm higher than the lowest point of the LN IM plane. That means that the plane cuts the top veneer of the ply.. which is ok.

The plane and the shooting board belong together... so the repeatability of 'shooting' is guaranteed.

The 'scottie' bench dog is a recent 're-discovery'... he is from a cereal box from my childhood (suitably chewed)... he is over 40 years old. I would love to have an Irish Wolfhound... the real thing... but he would be over my garden in one leap. Damned city dwelling... where are the wide open spaces of my youth.... ahhh well.

Re: I made a shooting board... epilogue

CONGER - The Irish diaspora in Munich

>Hi Wiley,

The local h-woods are few and far between... I live near the Alps and the dominating wood here is pine... and because it is typically warm here in the summer, the pine is really coarse grained. The only good native wood is beech... and that is mostly from central Germany.

Wood sizes... peculiarly, most common sizes reflect the imperial sizes - translated to metric.

50mm is 2"...

I fetched the wood I am using in my pix from Canada... yes... by hand when I was visiting family in Ontario. It did raise quite a few eyebrows en route... one man, two boys and 60kg of maple... but I have had much more adventurous 'carry homes' than that... how bout a 4ft cast bronze gong weighing 60lbs! Or my wife's extensive collection of Hindu Gods... Ganeesha in 50 variations!

As the Yorkies say... 'theres nought so quare as folk'.
