Hinges for Handplane Rack?

Scott in Douglassville, PA

>Hello, all -

Another inane question: I'm (still) building a smallish rack for my meager assortment of handplanes. It's kind of a Robot Wars-wedge-type thing. The front panel will be hinged and lift up to access some interior storage. The panel's on the order of 14"x26", and will likely hold about 30 pounds worth of planes, when the time comes that I have 30 pounds worth of planes.

Anyway, I'm ready to install some hinges. I already have some nice, forged iron, surface-mount butterfly hinges ("B" in this picture). They're stout, attractive, straight-forward to install. But will they hold up to this kind of load? Two hinges, four 5/8" #4 screws a piece.

Opinions on whether this'll work? Or should I run to dePot and grab a small piano hinge?

Thanks,

Scott

>Just a WAG but at 2 3/8" wide I think they should be strong enough it dosent say what gauge the steel is. 30# of planes 3# of panel. if they don't feal heavy enough when you get them order a couple more and use 3-4 of them or send them back for somthing heavier. I'm betting Rob might be able to help you out here

>I used piano hinges for the two tilted lids on my plane rack. I felt they would distribute the weight of my larger planes a lot more evenly and cause less stress on the lids. You can look up my solution in the Shop shots section of Woodcentral.
