New Benchdog

>Let me introduce Rufus, my latest benchdog. Three months old and came to stay with us 4 weeks ago. A definite keeper. He is definitely a handtool .. ahh pawtool guy. Willing to work in all indigenous Australian timber. Has been known to make light work of Jarrah offcuts (his speciality), but has shown a similar talent for carpets, clothing, and plastic buckets. Annoying habit of wagging his tail all the time, with little respect for any tools that share space on the bench. Excellent retriever of shavings.

Hope you are all having a good weekend.

Regards from Perth

>Derek,

Looks to me that Rufus is gonna be one big dingo!

Very nice looking pup Derek, better keep him well fed unless you don't mind you wood stash disappering. ;~)

Nice looking bench also. Any chance we can see more of it before rufus turnings it into splinters?

>Hi Todd

Yes, Rufus promises to be a big guy. Perhaps I should have called him Kujo.

My bench is not really worth showing. I built it in pre-Neander days. It is made out of solid Karri, which came from old railway sleepers I cut up into planks and then laminated together. Karri is similar in looks to Jarrah but is quite an oily timber. The Karri has remained very stable in the course of the past dozen years. It is not heavy enough to avoid racking on its own so it bolted to the wall. Very solid now. It is also quite small (4'6" long x 2'6" deep) since it has to share wall space with a tablesaw, etc when cars are parked (in theory!) in my double garage. I have double face vices to aid in planing long boards.

One of these days, when I refit the shop, I will build a new bench. For the present it is sufficient and fun just to plan and dream.

Ha, I like that!

We are in summer with temperatures often around the 40*C (104*F) mark. Very dry heat so it is surprisingly bearable. Needless to say we spend a lot of time in the water. I live alongside the Swan River (which is really more like a large bay that winds its way through Perth) and about 10 minutes from the closest beach.

It's a tough life.

Great pup Derek

>I suppose he comes with the usual guarantee-- double your dog in 8 weeks or your money back.

HRH Otis, Emperor of Chester and scourager of chipmunks and squirrels sends his greetings. The old boy is too dignified to get up on a bench, so he just lies in the corner of the bench room on his dog bed. Rank and age (12 yo) hath their priveleges.
