>The British police are about to run their "Bin that knife" campaign again shortly. This is where they try to get people to turn in survival type knives, lockblades etc- sort of like an illegal gun amnesty. I don't suppose anyone has pointed out to them that anything could be a weapon- including a mallet or an old shoe.

I mention the old shoe because I've discovered a free, frustration releasing, fun pastime, and a well attended forum to go with...slinging

Currently, one member has achieved distances of nearly 500metres (1/3 mile) and a speed of 375fps with a 100gram shot, a 45 shell I am told travels at 500fps.

I used the tongue and toe of an old shoe, neatly cut with my paring chisel and some boot laces, and in 20 minutes was happily flinging fist sized river rounded stones well across a river and up the other embankment.

Caution: on your first attempts, or until you've got the release figured out, don't step forward to see where your stone went.

How neander is this?

>I thought the British goverment had already banned all sharp knives for the protection of thier people who only have the use of Sporks now !.Kind of amazing really....Actually a .45 auto 200 gr. bullet goes from a low of about 800 fps to a high for a +P of about 1100 fps....I have a friend that is pretty good with a sling, he is also somwhat the expert on an Atlatal or Spear thrower. Makes his own equipment using mostly stone age tools and materials like raw hide and sinew.

Now Justin I do hope you are careful with that sling, wouldn't want anybody to get hurt and have your goverment out law leather shoes that had tongues that could be turned into deadly slings!....Todd

>Thank you Todd! I always appreciate your wealth of knowledge. Actually, my post was the result of a letter to the editor I was drafting, to be called, "Fling that String".

Kind Regards,
