Union plane???

Deadblow

>Did Union make any plaenes w/o any markings on the bed? I've got a 5 1/2 size that has the Union/NB (thick!) cutter and Union lever cap but that's it as far as Union markings. There is a "5 1/2" stamped on the bottom of the frog. Is this thing a Union or a Frankenplane? Thanks

>Sounds like a Union plane to me. Based on my observations, the early Union planes had Union and the plane number cast into the casting between the frog and the tote. Newer models(after Stanley acquired them?) were not marked excepton the iron and lever cap. I have also seen a number of planes that look like Union to me with Union irons that had a plain lever cap.

Another characteristic that helps identify Union planes are the knob and tote which look kind of reddish and it seems like I've read somewhere that they are made of mahogany.

Thanks, you're right....

Deadblow

>about the wood-it does look like Mahogany. This is an early one as it does not have a frog adj. screw. I haven't touched it as far as cleaning but I think I'm going to like it-it's a really stout plane. There was also a stamp of AU on the frog.

>As far as I'm aware, no Union planes had the screw adjustment on the frog.
