Hand Tool forum anniversary tomorrow

Tom Williams

>Well this is the last day of the first year of the Hand Tool forum at Woodcentral. At 6:25 am on Feb. 5, 2003 Ellis made the first post. There was a lot of emotion and uncertainty then, with the Badger Pond being suddenly drained and a herd of refugees flooding into Woodcentral and making demands on the unsuspecting natives. As for myself, I couldn't be more pleased and grateful over how it has developed. Thank you, Ellis, for being astonishingly generous and welcoming to all of us, and to Steven Shepherd who I believe originally suggested a Hand Tool forum. I plan on making an embarrasingly paltry donation tomorrow and look forward to another great year ahead.

Hear, hear!

>This is the ONLY forum I visit daily. Right behind it, several times a week, are the other fora on Wood Central. Every once in a while, I go to other places, but usually come running back to the comfort of this community, which continues to demonstrate that passion, civility, respect, and teasing can live happily together with a sometimes awe-inspiring collective level of knowledge.

Thank you, Ellis, Ted, and the other volunteers whose names are escaping my middle-aged brain, for all the hard work you do on maintaining this terrific forum.

Well Said Bill

Todd O. Cronkhite Native of Maine

>The generosity that not only Ellis, but the Native Centrailians displayed to we displaced Ponders simply cannot be understated. I know that the influx of Ponders, like the Crabs of Christmas Island caused Ellis much stress in re-arranging everything, and getting the equipment needed to handle the explosion of messages, but he did it anyways. I for one am thankful Mucho Grande for if not for this Generosity and Hospitality I would of lost touch with many a friend and that would of been very hard on me.

I loved Badger Pond dearly and was pretty emotinally distraught when Wayne announced that it was to be drained. Badger Pond was an excellent forum and while some may disagree it's excellence can be attributed directly to the efforts that Wayne put into moderating it. Yes, he had some strict rules, but he made them clear, he let you know the punishment for breaking the rules, and he enforced them. Yes, this caused a bit of heartache from time to time, but none-the-less Badger Pond was an excemplatary forum and I am proud to say that I was part of it.

I hope that Wayne, Petra, and Serf have all been well in the year since we've last heard from them. Hopefully Wayne will pop by sometime to at least say Hello, or perhaps become a reqular participant.

Todd O.

Great people. Vast, free flowing knowledge. A few people I would like to consider friends. And hey, we may be the only forum around which has mouse as a regular contributor! Thanks Lonnie.

Big thanks go to Ted, Dan, Dave, Garrett, Barb, Stephen and last but not least, Ellis. Combined you people (and others I have forgotten) work really hard to give us a nice warm community. Thank you.

>Happy Anniversary, Neanders - you knuckle draggers, you tail-less ones. This forum has been a lot of fun, and Very educational. Let's all keep up the donation level to Ellis, whose server fees quadrupeled when the site grew so large. We're going strong now, and it's to all our benefit. Thanks for remembering!

>Happy Anniversary Woodcentral! I am very grateful for this forum. I spend alot of time here and have learned a great deal.Woodcentral is the first forum I've ever participated in and I've been here about a year now. I must have arrived just after Hand Tools was started up.Since I discovered it I depend on it as a source of information and entertainment(some of the discussions are very entertaining). But more importantly as a place to interact with like minded people. It's a friendly neighborhood hangout that I would hate to have to live without.

Thanks Ellis for creating it,Stephen for suggesting it and all of the rest of you who help make it work. ---Jack

>Ellis, until Todd O. mentioned it, I had no idea of the additional expense required to accommodate us displaced Ponders. Thanks so much for giving us space. As others have said, this is a very comfortable format to visit and learn on a daily basis. Thanks for a wonderful year!

I can't believe it's been a year (long)

Ted Owen, Moderator

>I remember fondly the day Ellis opened the Hand Tools forum and asked for a volunteer Moderator. An on-again, off-again period reproduction enthusiast since 1979, I had been lurking at BP for about a year while doing woodworking full time and had learned a great deal and improved skills.

So I was more than saddened when Wayne announced the closing. IIRC, Wayne made a reference to Ellis, and that's how I found WC Hand Tools.

But I felt that greater knowledge and satisfaction could come from being a more active participant here. So I volunteered to moderate, and Ellis, in a moment of desperation, accepted on a trial basis without knowing me at all.

Our first few days started a bit rocky, with the turmoil over Wayne's style and philosophy, and the closing of BP. The old WC regulars felt overwhelmed. But we Ponders just needed a short period to grieve. And soon old and new became co-venturers.

Volume on Hand Tools now averages over 100 posts per day, twice that of the early weeks after the initial flurry. And I read them all. But, more importantly from a personal standpoint, as a result of becoming an active participant, I've learned more in the past year than any year since my first.

So I guess what I want to say is three things. First, for those who lurk only, please feel completely comfortable doing so. No one will ever pressure you to participate more fully, just to build our total postings on WC (to show potential advertisers). But I can tell you without hesitation that you will learn and enjoy much more if you do participate.

Second, thank you, Ellis. You gave us a home when we lost our old one; you've invested heavily in time and money on our behalf; and you've genuinely given us a strong voice in how Hand Tools is administered. And we appreciate all you've done.

And finally, and most important, thank you to our participants. Many of you have given me much more than I put into the effort. Many of you have become internet friends; many others I have enjoyed meeting in person. Many on WC have spoken with such united voice that publishers and manufacturers have heard and have made available products to better meet our needs and desires. And all of you have have had a hand in making Hand Tools the most supportive and knowledgeable group of hand tool enthusiasts on the internet.

Happy anniversary, everyone.

Gratefully, Ted

Pass the Hat!

>Thank you, Ellis and Ted, and all of the others.

For those who can easily afford it, I encourage you to donate to Wood Central to help with the operational costs.

Don't forget, if you have a PayPal account, that you can set up a subscription to donate automatically, on a monthly basis. Perhaps a dime a day? I am sure that anything will help.

Don't forget those Benefit Auctions!

Do you have a hat and tee shirt in each color?
