Kansas City Woodworking Show Coming Up

>No, no, not an advertisement for the show. The Kansas City Woodworking Show is coming up February 13-15. It's actually in Overland Park again this year. As many of you know, Kansas City is the center of the woodworking universe (OK, maybe for just that weekend). Continuing our tradition, a small group of hand tool users will be getting together on Saturday morning to have breakfast before the show. Ernie Miller started this three (?) years ago. In the past, it was sort of a Badger Pond (may it rest in peace) group. No excuse to let the demise of the Pond stop this bunch, so we'll continue with the Hand Tool Forum bunch from WoodCentral (Ellis and Ted are invited!!). We would probably still be polite if some power tool folks showed up (though we might stare). Since the show opens at 10 AM and parking can get tight, let's meet by no later than 8:30. We'll meet at Tippins (I-435 and Metcalf) again, just down the street from the show. I'll try to get there early to hold a table a have a coffee pot ready. If you'd like to join us, please e-mail me directly and we'll hold a chair for you.

Roger Nixon and Ernie Miller will be coming over from Topeka. We are planning a group excursion to some of the other woodworking interest places in town.

Kansas City Woodworkers Guild will have some hand tool interest displays going during the day at the show.

You can get more detailed information about "The Woodworking Shows" at their website.

>in North KC on Antioch Rd. is having a carving tool sharpening seminar/demonstration from 10AM to 1PM on Saturday. I plan to be in attendance at this. Then stay over and catch the show on Sunday. And look at those MiniMax and Laguna tools.

>Our local Woodcraft store (in Lenexa) is doing a hand plane tune up demo at the store at 1 PM on Saturday afternoon. They will also have L-N planes at 10% off. The Woodcraft store is about 5 miles from the Woodworking Show. I believe Woodcraft personnel will be working both the show and their store that weekend.

Another mile away from Woodcraft is Overland Tool. They are having their own open house, sale and tool show while the WW show is in session. Overland Tool has free food and pop. They will have reps from most of the big power tool manufacturers. Overland Tool carries some hand tools, most portable power tools and all the way up to commercial machinery. Check out the CNC router tables and automatic cabinet door making machinery. (Oppps. This is the hand tool forum).

Some of us may head up to Turn About Wood (local woodturning store) to check it out. Maybe they have pole and treadle lathes????

>I hope we do make it to Turn About. I was checking their website yesterday and it looks like they have a nice selection of wood for sale.

I subscribe to the philosophy that lathe tools are hand tools and it does't matter what motivates the wood to spin. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it :) ).

>I am not planning on making it to the breakfast. I'm coming down from Des Moines. I plan to leave about 7AM on Saturday and make it to Turn About Wood for their 10AM carving tool sharpening demo. Sharpening carving tools is something I need to learn and I think a hands on demo will be very useful. I was not planning on going to the woodworking show and KC until Sunday but Turn About emailed me thir flyer and I saw the carving tool sharpening demo. I thought it was worth going down a day early to catch that. So I'll spend my $35 for a cheap motel on the north side of KC and stay over for the show on Sunday. I am assuming the Turn About Wood demo is a several hour thing and I will not have time to fully appreciate the woodworking show if I show up mid afternoon on Saturday. Although I might go to the show on Sauturday and see if I can see enough so I can drive back to Des Moines Saturday evening. Making it to the breakfast would require me to leave Des Moines about 5AM. Much too early for me.

Of course everything depends upon the weather. A snowstorm on Friday or Saturday cancels everything. I have just enough sense to stay home when the roads get bad. Minneapolis is having a show a month or so later so I can always drive up there to see the European tools.
