T&G plane iron width?

Dirk Wright

>Hello, I have a Union 41 (Stanley 48) T&G plane, and I notice that the irons are wider than the profile. Is that normal? I would have thought that you'd want the iron to only be as wide as profile/support part. I'm having trouble describing the part of the plane where the iron is secured and is supposed to be the shape of the profile, in this case a rectangular groove. The irons are wider by about a 1/16" or so.

I also have a skewed iron woodie 7/8" rebate plane with the same issue. I have no idea if these are the original irons. I notice that a brand new Stanley 90 has the iron at exactly the same width as the body.

Should I file the irons of the Union to make them the correct width?

Leave them alone

>They are always like that and work well, so I think the old timers had figured out it was best that way.

I have a 48 and a pair of woodies that both have irons like that and both work very well. Fun job, making T&G

>My fontset's always been messed up here. Change it, and this site works, but all others are goofy.

Glad I'm not the only one who saw that change today...

Mr. T&G has an opinion

jim_reed@marietta

>I make blades for this plane. They should be 5/16". Actually the blade size only matters when you cut the groove. Accordingly, the right hand blade is the only one which has to be 5/16", and only while cutting the groove. You can use an oversized blade in that position when cutting tongues on oversized lumber. The plane is set up to cut a tongue which is exactly 1/4". The groove has to be slightly larger (1/16") so things will fit. Hope this helps. Good luck with your project.

The Grunchies are Back!

>Every now and then the grunchies come and make mincemeat out of my name, I don' know why, I did not change anything, the change must come from the forum software.
