Busted Lever Cap

Mike MacDonald

>While visiting my parents last week I mentioned my recent foray into hand tools to my uncle. He told me that he had a few woodworking hand tools left from my grandfather and asked if I would be interested. Well being one never to look a gift horse in the mouth I said sure. What he brought me were a couple of Starette straight edges, a stanley block plane and a No 5 Record plane. The Record jack is in very good shape, but the Lever Cap has been broken and then repaired, my question is how will this affect performance of the plane, as I would like to keep it complete as my grandfather had it, but also would like to be able to use it, as it is a step up from the Handyman No 5 I currently use.

thank- you for any information in advance.

>I think the best person to answear this question is YOU ! you have the plane, Sharpen it up and try it out and you will soon see how it performs. I think it would take the Amazing Kreskin to answear if a repair of the lever cap would affect the planes use with out seeing how it is repaired or using it.....Now I am thinking of a number between 1 and a 100......Todd

>yes the tune and test method was definately considered and will be used, but being relatively new to hand tools, I just wondered if there was something specific in the fit of the cap that I should be looking for to try and get best performance.

>Just be sure the amount of pressure can still be adjusted via the mounting screw and that the bottom edge of the cap makes contact over its full width on the capiron and you should be fine.

Otherwise, replacement caps come up often enough on eBay ($5 typ)and I believe any stanley 2" wide cap will work on the record #5. Put the broken one in a drawer and keep it around for when you pass the tool on to YOUR grandchildren.
