Why did this plane sell for so much? *LINK*

>This looks to me like just an inexpensive carpenter's plane. I would've spent 8 or 10 bucks on it - not because I thought it was worth anywhere near that much, but because I need two parts off it to repair one that belonged to my father. He was a carpenter, and it was his toolbox plane. Anyway, is this thing more collectible than I thought or did somebody just overpay like crazy for it?

>Well this plane has three things going for it....Condition, Condition....and Condition ! Looks to be Mint or at least Near mint. A common plane in an uncommon condition. While a common plane I do think it would have been a shame if you got it to use for parts for your plane, which I take is in lesser condition. Why not just pick up a beat one to use, this plane in Very Good condition would probably had sold for $5....Will point out that only two people bid over $10 and they then went head to head over it raising the price....If you think about it really $29 ain't all that much to pay for somthing you want, eh?.....Todd

>What parts do you need, Lewis? I think I have one of these laying around (if I didn't throw it away). I took the blade to use in a homemade rounder plane.

Thanks, Roger

>My plane's missing the knob, and the adjustment wheel is broken. I think I have it covered now (someone sent me an email and offered me one I can use for parts), but just in case, if you happen to run across your old one, let me know, and if I still need the parts, I'll be happy to pay you for it and cover any shipping costs. Thanks again.

>This demonstrates to me, once again, that there's no accounting for taste. I own one of those -- couldn't turn it down at 50 cents, missing the knob with a beatup iron. Can't imagine paying $30 for it. I didn't even pay half that for my No. 65, which is a good tool.

Well....

>I'm sort of thinking that the people that bought this Mint plane didn't pay $30 for a plane like yours which has a missing knob and a beat up iron, eh?......Personaly I wouldn't pay .50 cents for a rough Handyman block plane like that.....Todd

>Mighta' been the perfect decal. There are collectors of that old advertisia stuff, so that might of been the draw.
