dovetail saw

Jack from Maine

>Awhile back I purchased a dovetail saw thru ebay from someone in England for $2 if my memory is correct. It is an old split nut steel backed open handled model.I cleaned it and sent it to Tom Law for refiling and since have learned dovetailing with it.I love it,it's a nice saw to use.Very comfortable, smooth cutting, lightweight. I'm trying to find out about the maker. Etched in the steel back is the words Lowdon and Sheffield(the L in Lowdon may be wrong but all other letters are clear). Below that are the letters J.T&S. Anyone know anything of this maker? Thanks---Jack

Bowdon?

Rob Brophy Niagara Falls

>Hi Jack,

I have a similar dovetail saw that is clearly stamped "Bowdon & Co"...could the "L" on your saw be a portion of a "B"?

Unfortunately, "Bowdon & Co" (or Lowdon) isn't listed in any of my (few) antique tool reference books. If I ever find any info I'll send you a note.

>Yes,that is quite possible. The "L" shape is almost completely faded. Could very easily be all that's left of a "B". How old is your saw? The seller told me mine was from the turn of the century.---Jack

>Hi Jack,

I would agree with your tool seller...it's a very modest little saw with a steel back and only two split nuts, (if I recall correctly...it's in my toolbox at work right now). Although it's a really well built saw, it's obviously not a top of the line model...it has no medallion or etched logo. The maker didn't scrimp on the blade steel tho', it stays sharp a good long time.

I can send you a picture if you want to compare the two saws...just let me know.

My saw was brought over from England by my Grandmother after WWII...it was her favorite porkchop saw!

>Jack-

I certainly don't know who made your saw, but I will point out that there was a Joseph Turner & Son in Sheffield mid-19th C. [the Son went on to be the Turner in Turner, Naylor & Sons, best known for their I.Sorby 'Mr.Punch' trademark edge tools]. It's likely that Mr.Turner factored tools in addition to manufacturing them. Any possibility that the Lowdon is actually London? [a lot of Sheffield manufacturers had branches in London, or at least claimed to]

>The "W" is very clear. The only letter that is in doubt is the"L"/"B".the first letter. That thought had occured to me at first tho.All I had to do to dispel that was clean my glasses.---Jack
