Weekend Projects

Ernie Miller Topeka

>Well I have survived my first full week of work since Thanks Giving and I am beat! I hope to get some work done on the drawers for under the bench this project it taking way to long. My nephew is spending the night tonight and bringing his tools he wants some help on a school project he needs to make a wagon and put ten things in it that would have been taken on a wagon train. Most kids are using shoe boxes but he thinks he can do better. Any ideas for wheels? Sunday is the super bowl Go Panthers! And Survivor I am in two different pools I need to root for Lex and Amber. I will also start selecting wood for a blanket chest that my wife wants. It is more for a ladder to get the old fat dog up to the bed than for storage. Im thinking of a cross between a blanket chest and a step Tansu chest. I will have to think on the design a little. Every One Have a SAFE and ROCKIN Good Weekend!!!!!

>I busted open a really nice ash log last weekend, and made a few bulbous spindles for a sack back settee. I'm going to continue with this set, but I'm really looking forward to making the long parts for the arm and bow. While I'm at it I will do one for a continuous arm.

I'm going to try to get my son out in the shop to make another handle for a croquet mallet out of this log. Croquet is his latest thing. (I made a handle for him last week, and its been sitting behind the radiator waiting to be fit for a head). He thought that was the bee's knees.) While he's on the shaving horse I'll start turning the undercarriage for the settee.

Have a great weekend!

>I made a wagon for my wife a few years ago. It was just for a display, so it did not need to be too fancy, nor were kids going to push it around or anything. What I did for the wheels was to cut out a wooden ring for the rim (I know that the grain was wrong if I wanted strength as a toy or anything) and made a small "biscuit with a hole in it for the hub. I partially drilled some holes (very shallow) in the hub for small dowels and made some dimples in the outside ring. By tapering the ends of the dowels a bit, getting them to the right length and a bit of fiddling, I could put glue on the ends of the dowels, kind of suspend the hub on the dowels centered in the hub, and then push it into place, forcing the dowels into the holes and dimples. I set it aside until the glue dried and then mounted them. It does not look quite like a real wheel, but it is wood and has spokes. She was happy with it for her use. That might work for you. You could also drill holes through the outside rim and push the dowels through into the hub, leaving them a bit proud until the glue dries then finish them off flush. If you painted the rim, you would not see them.

Will in K.C.

>This weekend I think I will make another chisel rack for my pile of miscellaneous chisels. I can't get enough of a good design.

I am dreaming of ways to spend too much money at the K.C. woodworking show on the 14th and looking forward to meeting some of the good folks from this website for breakfast.

Have a great weekend

>Re: ...ladder to get the old fat dog up to the bed

Been there, done that, had to make a second one (with two steps)as short dogs got older and fatter.

More working on tool storage this weekend - there have been lots of great ideas and photos posted here lately. Have to get some money down on some props for the Superbowl, and try to hunt down some decent bread for muffaletta.
