>I bought this #8 Bedrock on e-bay and it's covered with what looks like brown tremclad. I am thinking about lightly sanding and using Circa 1850 low odour paint remover. As for changing the iron I plan on making a 01 replacement I have some 2 1/2" O1 laying around do I need to buy some larger stuff or is that wide enough?

>I don't follow the type studies well enough to know whether all No. 8's have irons 2-5/8" wide, but mine does. I don't know whether that missing 1/8" would be a problem, but if I were going to invest that kind of money and time, I think I'd want the full width of iron.

>Well i think i would test a couple spots just to see what cuts that brown paint. Who knows what it could be and sometimes something simple works.

As far as i know the blade is or should be 2 5/8", just like Bill mine is.

First thing i would do is use it,sharpen and give it test run, then you will know how much work you want to put into it.

>Are you removing it because it interferes with function or because you like your planes to look like the originals? I'm not familiar with "tremclad," don't know how hideously ugly it is...

My No. 8 has lost all its japanning, my No. 78's japanning is covered with little pink spots (ex-maintenance shop in the Barbie factory?), and my No. 62 is, for some reason, lightly spray-painted gold on every surface except the sole. They all seem to work fine in spite of these deficiencies.

>Caught me. To gloat even more, total cost was

$3, with the paint thrown in at no extra charge. It's got a tiny amount of chipping at the corners of the trailing edge of the mouth and the handle was kinda loose, but it's OK otherwise.
