Felt stuff for drawers and jewelry boxes

>I would like to cover the bottom of a couple of shop drawers with something soft to cushion the more delicate and valuable measuring instruments, etc. What do you recommend?

In the same vane, off on the honeydo horizon, I have a jewelry box to make, with lots of little dividers. What would you put in that to keep the jewelry from rattling around?

Or maybe suede.

Ed Snow

>You can get a hide in about any color imaginable, glue it to a false bottom and stuff it in or just glue it to the bottom and run a tiny moulding round the edges to cover the edges. As an added bonus your drawers smell great.

>How about a router pad? Plenty soft enough and pretty high friction to boot.

As for the jewelery box, how about flocking lkike Lee Valley sells? Check the link below.

>DonJer (Don and Jerry) makes the flocking kit sold by LV. The daughter of Jerry still runs the business and can answer any question with authority. They just came out with a new compressor-powered spray gun. Check it out.

>Have you used that stuff? I have a vague memory of fooling with something similar in my car modeling days, and the stuff being somewhat delicate. Maybe it was the glue I used back then (35-40 years ago).

>Some fabric outlet stores carry the car trunk liner and it's cheap and durable.

>Sorry Don, no I haven't. I can't offer any comments about its performance. More of an idea than anything else.

>One of my favorite places to find excellent lining fabrics is Goodwill (at least in Venice and Naples, Florida). One of my last projects was French-fitted with a superb camelhair broadloom from a designer overcoat. It had a couple rewoven places -- price: six dollars. Silks, Italian velvets, Irish linen, tweeds, everything. My nicest fitted case was lined with brushed calf vellum (NOT from Goodwill). For a plusher effect, thin batting underneath the lining is nice, if not overdone.

No, I ran away home so no updates.

Ed Snow

>But I am back now, I have not really been doing anything other than final details and getting stuff ready for the show. Which has kept me really really busy, I had two catostrophic parts failures in the project so I have been correcting those and designing the next piece.

>They make -- or at least used to make -- felt with a pressure sensitive adhesive back. Among other things, I've used with a Cub Scout den to make their flag -- just cut out pictures and put them

on a square of cloth. As I remember, it should work well for lining a drawer or a box -- in fact,

I'm about to look for some to line a cuff-link box.

>That sounds good for non-divided drawers. Please do post where you find it, and your experience with it.

Thanks,

>PSA backed felt is available in sheets at the Borg. They sell it to stick to the bottoms of lamps, etc. Should be on the aisle with the hinges and knobs and rubber baby buggy bumpers. It's good enough for a toolbox, but a bit coarse for a jewelry box, and only comes in green and charcoal.

>I bought PSA-type felt at a fabric shop -- JoAnn's fabric IIRC. It comes in a variety of colors, including red and green.

>Well, great! I certainly have plenty of Borgs around, and there is a JoAnns one mile away. The shallow top bench drawers are about ready, so I will get some of the stickum stuff this weekend.
