>I forgot to put that it also says Rochester,NY. Also it has been stamped a few times with "J.M.R." spiradically on the front. It looks fairly old, I dont know about the 1832, It doesnt look that old. I know just about nothing about planes, so my terms are probably wrong. It maybe a box plane, cuz it looks like a box, lol. The "blade" has two pieces to it with what looks like a large flat head screw holding them together. The "blade" is held in the plane with a wooden wedge that looks like it has been hit with a hammer wuite a bit. Anyway, thanks for the info in advance.

>Daniel: 1832 was the year David R. Barton first made tools in his first partnership. He subsequently worked under a number of other partnership and company names plus that marking was used until 1923 by another maker who succeeded him. 1849 would have been the earliest that marking would have been used, but the late 1800s is the most likely time your plane was made. I saw on last Friday at

Nick at Abilene, Texas

>Fredricksburg, Texas. It was on display at a Prairie Village Historic display.

There was a long neglected WW bench and a Large wooden plane firmly attached to the top. the display note said it took 4 men to operate the plane. It must have been 7 feet long. Said it was used to plane logs for Timber Frame logs.

Looking at the size, it was a large plane the blade about 6" wide, it would probably take 4 men to use it.

Amazing what settlers did.........Nick

>I thought one that size was just a "Texas Block Plane" !.....Good story about it being so big that it took 4 guys to work it , I could be wrong but sure sounds like it is a coopers plane, a overly long plane that is used by turning it upside down and running the barrel staves over it instead of moving the plane. While I don't have any 7 feet long have a couple over 5 ft......Todd
