plastic stanley tote?

Jack from Maine

>I was at an antique store this morning and came upon a pair of interesting stanley planes. A #5 and a #7,both corrugated. Appeared to be the same era. From the general appearance and patents on the base I guess they're from early 1900s to the 40s.I'm no expert however, just guessing. They had similar wear ,collected grime and light rust so I figure they came from the same user. The rear handle on both planes felt and looked like some sort of plastic. Both exactly the same with the same amount of wear. They are dark brown but where the surface is worn the material becomes lighter in color.

Anyone ever heard of these? What would that material be,and was it used commonly?

BTW--Not even a thought about purchase, these people were asking $80 each for these. Although the #5 was knocked down to $65. This store sells broken handyman's for $25 . I was just hunting for hidden treasures.---thanks, Jack

>I don't think i have ever seen or heard of an older stanley with a plasitc handle, Do think they started using plasic in the 70's or 80's. You do see Aluminum handles a good bit,...maybe one of these that was painted?.....Starting in the 1930's Stanley used a plastic called "Stanloid" in thier chisels but again don't think I ever seen a tote made out of it...i could be wrong though....Todd

>Bakelite (sp?) was used in manufacturing prior to plastic ('30s & '40s??). Don't know if Stanley used it. If they did, they may not have cataloged it...which means those might be highly collectible...which means you may have just stumbled across a hitherto unknown type ;>)!!

>More likely they are replacement modern plastic handles. Do the handles have any markings (that would be a dead giveaway)? Todd, out of interest, did any of the other plane makers manufacture a plastic or bakelite Stanley-lookalike handle?

>I have a Chapin patent plane with what appears to be an original tote that is clearly some sort of plastic.

I've never used it -- picked it up (relatively) cheap as a shelf sitter, usually in my office, to demonstrate the diversity of approaches people took before the convergence of technology to one or two solutions (three, now that Rob Lee and his elves are coming up with new ideas).

follow up

Jack from Maine

>Well,I went back and explored those planes a little more and I feel silly. They aren't plastic . However they are very nice wooden totes considering the age and wear on these planes. I need new glasses. The handles are dark (no paint splatters)with a high gloss almost plastic like finish. When I looked closer(through the bottom of my bifocals)I could see wood grain and voids in the finish. I had come prepared to remove the handle and look at the bottom but all it required was a closer look.

The #7 had 3 patents The #5 had 1,no mark on either lateral adjuster arm. The adjuster lever was flat with a mortised in tab. I believe these few parts date these at pre war. I can't seem to find a link to The Stanley plane dating flow chart. Anyone help me there? thanks and sorry for the misinformation---Jack

Patent on Stanley Hard Rubber Tote *LINK*

Steve Reynolds

>Stanley did make a hard rubber (nee, plastic) tote before they made the aluminum totes. They were aimed at the manual training classes where, evidently, the boys were a little rough on the rosewood.
