>I sold a couple of razee hollow planes to a fellow to distress hardwood flooring.(can't imagine doing such a thing myself) but he knows little about sharpening. I am having him do SS but he wants a video any idea's?

Sharpening with Leonard Lee

Greg Phillips, Medford, OR

>Does not deal specifically with Scary Sharp, but it is a great resource for sharpening all kinds of tools and includes a nice section on kitchen knives. It is available on DVD or VHS. I just picked it up recently and was quite impressed.

You said "hollow", but I'm guessing the sole of the planes is convex - to geneate adze style texturing on the floor?

This is quite a common stunt. At the Weald and Down museum they use scrub planes to texture the surfaces of machine cut beams; they just don't have enough trained manpower to hand cut/plane everything (they do representative samples "the real way") but they still want an appropriate (or near) appearance.

Comment on distressed flooring

Jack from Maine

>I have sanded hardwood floors. Not newly laid but old worn, scarred, dished out hardwood. I used Clark drum sanders/edgers and hand scraped the corners. My back hurts just thinking about it. Plus the dust is a big pain. I think making floors look old is dumb but it's my own personal predjudice. If you want a distressed floor come to Maine and remove one from an old farmhouse and give them a new flat floor in exchange.:-)--Jack

Hollow = concave plane

>Whoops....I thought a 'Hollow', as in Hollows & Rounds, referred to a plane with a convex blade that will cut a concave profile. That profile is referred to as a 'Hollow'?? Someone correct me, please??

Association trick to keep concave & convex 'straight'.....the 'cave' portion of concave reminds me of a hole in the ground, thus a concave profile is hollowed out ;>)!!

Re: concave and rounds

Pam Niedermayer - Austin, TX

>Concave:

Etymology: Middle English, from Middle French, from Latin concavus, from com- + cavus hollow -- more at CAVE

1 : hollowed or rounded inward like the inside of a bowl

2 : arched in : curving in -- used of the side of a curve or surface on which neighboring normals to the curve or surface converge and on which lies the chord joining two neighboring points of the curve or surface

Rounds are planes that are rounded on their cutting edge to create a concave surface.

If you can remember those two definitions, everything else can be figured out until it all comes naturally.

Re: concave and rounds

Frank Mutchler

>So the terms 'Hollow' & 'Round' refer to the plane not the profile the plane cuts? A hollow plane cuts a round profile and a round plane cuts a hollow profile. Got it! Geeeeeszz...makes me feel like I'm cutting a bunch of crown molding...things get done upside down and backwards ;>)!!

Re: concave and rounds

Bill Houghton, Sebastopol, CA

>Pam, that second definition made everything SO much clearer to my stopped-at-basic math mind.

I understand that hollows and rounds are the only molding planes described by their shape rather than the shape they cut. This is how I keep track of the concept, although wooden molding planes are so rare around here (this part of CA settled too late to have much of a reservoir of woodies, I think) that it's a mostly useless knowledge.
