Plane Rack Finish Question

John Weber - GO BUCKS!

>I asked this in the chat room last night. I'm finishing my white oak plane rank with Deft as a sealer. It was recommended I apply a finish to keep the (tannin - sp) in the oak from reacting with the metal planes. Now my question: I applied a coat of Deft last night and it looks good, however the can recommends three coats. I like the single coat - nice matte sheen, little buildup, etc... Is one coat enough to seal the oak and "protect" the planes? I think it was Stephen who helped my last night, but didn't know for sure.

Thanks - John

>I saw that, and was a little leery of white oak for that reason. The best way to know for sure would be to rest a piece of iron you don't mind staining on a sample (or an area that you also don't mind staining) for a week or two and seeing what happens. Even if that looks fine, it would be a good idea to check frequently for a while to see if it is holding up (or, just use the planes a bunch).

>I'll go home and check mine it is about 2-3 years old and has no finish on it. I don't remember any oss staining under the planes when I remove them from the rack but will check bothe the planes and rack to see. I have a very dry shop so my results could be differant from yours.

>I don't see any problems with mine the #6 &8 are not a shiney on the bottom as the other planes but they are not used as much as the others. There is no staining of the surface of the rack from the metal being in contact. So if you are woried I think a quick coat is all you will need. As stated befor my shop is quite dry and that might have somthig to do with it. I swere some times I think you people lay awake at night dreaming of things to worry about.
