>I've been searching for plans for wooden planes (woodworking planes, not airplanes) for a while now, and I can't find any good plans. Any links or suggestions will be appreciated.

>Hi Tim,

If I've done this corretly, below is a link to the article on the College of the Redwoods site about making a Krenovian planel. I hope this helps.

Take care,

>I've attached an amazon link to David Finck's book on making and mastering wooden hand planes. (good directions on making Krenov planes) He has his own web site as well. The Hock Tools site offers blades and kits/plans developed with the college of the Redwoods. See Lee Valley for its book on designs of different wood planes as a reference. There is a book out by John Whelan that I have heard of but have never looked at in detail. Hope this helps.

>Tim,

David Finck wrote an excellent book, Making and Mastering Wood Planes, which I am now startled to see is out of print already. A quick check shows a few copies in the UK but nothing on the US used book market. That's a shame. His book was a very thorough beginner's guide to making Krenov-style wood planes, but also includes lots of great tips on how to use planes for various tasks, clever ways to use a workbench and jigs for assisting with planing. There's even an entire chapter on scraping techniques. Try your library or email David to see if he's made progress in finding a new publisher.

>"Wooden plane plans" is a pretty general area. Are you interested in traditional western style planes, Krenov plane, Japanese planes, ....?

If you want to make western planes the best book I've found is John Whelan's "Making Traditional Wooden Planes". It covers bench planes, molders, plows, and dados. If you want to make side escapement molding planes you might also want to get Tod Herrli's video on making a hollow and round set. Even with the video you'll still want Whelan's book to understand things like spring angle that don't come up when making a hollow and round.

Lee Valley sells an inexpensive book called, "Wooden Planes and How to Make Them" that covers some additional territory like corebox, coopers planes, and panel raisers.

>Dear Tim,

This may be too late for you, but there is an article in Traditional Woodworking by Jeff Loader that describes the construction of an adjustable wooden smoothing plane. The details are: No.160, Sept. 2003, page 48.

Cheers,

Jim
