Stanley 45 question

Bill Houghton, Sebastopol, CA

>I bought a replacement blade clamp wing nut for my 45 (thanks for the referral to Fine Tool Journal, Joel - great prices, great service), and I've got a question: The nut is retained in the body by a forked piece of sheet steel that fits into a groove in the body -- this also allows the collar below the groove to push the clamp bolt out to loosen the blade/iron.

On the new nut, this collar is thicker than the opening in the body, resulting in the nut retainer not sitting flat on the body casting. Is this normal, or should I shim the retainer up so it's flat?

I think

>Probably does not matter for performance. In use, the nut just has to be finger tight to work. Wedge pressure holds the blade. Good luck with yours.
