Block plane rack suggestions

>Fellow knuckledraggers-

Since we're rolling on the chisel rack ideas, I'd love to see what you all do for block planes, as I'm scratching my head on that one right now.

For my uses, I like to have block planes near to hand. I store the bulk of my tools on a wall mounted rack. I tried a small shelf for the block planes, but it just didn't seem right, nor secure. I felt like it would be too easy to knock them off. And then they project (or the shelf projects) six inches or so out from the wall (my bench is along the wall). Some kind of vertical, hanging solution would be great, but I'm not quite sure how to do it- a holster of sorts perhaps?

Right now they are in limbo- a.k.a. the tool well at the back of the bench. I've got four that make up the users- a #102, a LV LA, a LN 60.5R and a #18.

>Hi William

I had the same problem with my block planes and I am in a similar situation. (Very small shop and my bench is against the wall.) After seeing some of the block plane holsters in some of the woodworking catalogs and being an occasional leatherworker, I decided to make my own. When I did, I put grommets on either side of the holster at the base of the flap so I could hang them.

After doing that for 2 of my block planes I came up with an idea to make a "sandal" for the next one - an idea that works well for smaller wooden smooth planes as well. I call it a sandal because it looks just like a sandal. It has a "sole" a "toe" and a "strap". I make the sole longer than the plane and I put a grommet at the "heel" so I can hang them. The strap goes around the plane behind the blade and snaps. It hold them very securely

I really like having my block planes handy as well. I have a shelf over my bench and I hang them on the edge of the shelf to my right so I can just reach up and grab them any time. It also lets me hang my smaller wooden planes wherever there is a handy space on the wall.

Hmmm, I wish I could - and I guess I can, but not in a very timely manner. I don't have a digital camera but I can take a picture get it developed then scan it - long turn around. On the other hand, it seriously looks just like a sandal without a raised heel. It's fairly easy to make and I can describe how if you'd like.

>Hi Fred,

It might be a day or two, but I'll get you a detailed description of how I make them.
