>I just know that most of you have digital cameras, lots of photogenic hand tools and maybe even a WoodCentral hat. And you probably visit lots of photogenic places and hand-tool venues. So how about some new photos for our Sightings page?
>In keepping with the objective of the rest of this site, I would like to see this space occupied with woodworking related items that would inform or inspire-hand made tools or a piece of furniture for example. This change in format would be more useful and more entries would come forth.
Is there an "old Sightings photos archives" where we can browse the previous ones?
What is the maximum file size or horzontal and vertical pixel count you would prefer? Do you prefer to do your own editing and compression, or would you appreciate it if we do that before we send them to you?
>I'm not particular about the nature of the sightings shots. They can be photos of finished work, tools, WC hats, people -- whatever. The idea is to have a constantly changing selection of shots that amuse, inspire or teach.
I've already received one submission since I posted this call for entries this morning. Keep 'em coming!
>All the previous photos are still on the server, but they are not available for public access. Nor have I preserved all the original caption information, so all you see is the pix themselves.
I am presently almost finished compiling the new WoodCentral Fifth Anniversary CD-ROM. It includes messages from the main messageboard, along with our articles, shop shots and, as a bonus, hundreds of sightings photos. That will be the only way to stroll down WoodCentral memory lane.
As far as photos for sightings, I don't care what size they are, although I would prefer not to be receiving any gigantic e-mail attachments. I do the photo editing and whatever compression is necessary, so if you just send me shots that are, say, 600 pixels on the longest dimension, that will give me plenty to work with, without making the filesizes too large.
>... unless there are suddenly a lot more hours in the day, or unless we find a sightingsmeister who is organized enough to keep copies of everything from now on.
Actually, as I told William, I never bothered to save captions with the photos, so all we're likely to ever have will be the pix themselves. I could probably reconstruct captions, but I need to concentrate on looking ahead, not back.
Enjoy them while they're here. You might also enjoy the raw images on the new CD. In many cases, I'm including the original, full sized photos, so you can see a lot more detail than you can in the little 240-px-high shots we publish in the welcome frame.
