Question for Ebay Seller

Angelo in Cornwall, NY

>For those of you who sell frequently on Ebay, do you get a lot of deadbeat bidders? In the last month I've sold about 20 items and have had 3 people who would not/will not pay. One no response at all, one kept promising payment but hasn't made any, one sent a check, unsigned, and now I get no response.

Just trying to see if this is "normal" for Ebay.

>no but it depends on what you sell. some things seem to invite those types. I think in the 4 eyars on ebay maybe 2 deadbeats.

>I agree with Steve, it depends on what you are selling. With tools and woodworkers your odds (at least for me are much less). They also tend to run in groups, I'll go a couple months with none then have 3 in a week. I just surpassed 1000 feedback with over 1200 positives, maybe 1500 - 1600 total transactions (some people don't leave any feedback) and have only had maybe 10 to 20 deadbeats (I think), not to bad.

Good Luck - John

>I don't know what my percentage is but one dead beat is one to many.I normaly wait about 3 weeks befor sending them a reminder though Ebay.I also email them myself and ask if they can pay or what.Tell them I need to hear back with in 72 hrs. Most times is a misunderstand. But have had people just don't respond or say they decide they don't want to buy it any more,[I tell them they are wrong...They have already bought it , they just don't want to pay for it any more!].I give them a week or so and then report them to ebay as non paying bidders and put in for a return of my listing fees. Can be a hassel but ebay will kick them off if this happens a couple times.I then leave them the negative they desearve.Often they will have been kicked off by this time because they do this to others as well.....Todd

>Well, sometimes things just run amok. Frankly, I'd rather have a non-payer than a bounced check. It's really unfair to characterize anyone as a deadbeat on the basis of one transaction.

And then there's the mistake I made a month ago, put in a snipe bid, then looked at the item again, realized the seller only took money orders, which I just don't do; so I went back to the snipe service, told it to cancel (this was several hours before auction end). The next I heard, I'd won the auction, and I still don't know why the cancel didn't work.

And then there's the non-responsive seller. Bid on one of many stump anvils, seller in Arkansas, at the price requested. Seller never responded to requests for shipping or anything else.

>I'm sorry but if someone buys somthing off me by being the high bidder, don't pay in 3 weeks,[Ebay gives them only 10 days], doesn't respond to my two follow up emails or tell me they don't intend to pay for what ever reason I don't know what to call them if not a Dead Beat Bidder since they are going back on what they promised to do when bidding...ie pay for what they won. If they do this once they are a one time Dead Beat if they do it twice they are a two time Dead Beat......Todd

Do you think that the threat of negative feedback produces much of a response (regarding getting paid)?

Related to this, if you did leave negative feedback, can they not then turn around and do the same to you? Do you worry about this?

Regards from Perth

Derek (who buys a LOT more than he sells)

>I'm not Todd; but this happened to me, not once, not twice, but four times, one of these mongrels hit me twice (the guy who's check bounced) convinced me to quit selling stuff on ebay.

I agree

John Weber - GO BUCKS!

>and do about the same with my customers, it seems to work well, and gives the guys that make an honest mistake a break. If someone says they made an error bidding, I let them out of the auction if they cover ebay fees - just part of doing business.

>I don't know if bothers most non paying bidders, imagine it might to some but in my experance most people that don't pay are new to ebay and just bid on a whim.Often when I check they are no longer a registed user,[been kicked off]. Lets face it negative feedback doesn't normaly really hurt a bidder , does any sellers routenly check the feedback of a bidder? I know I don't.

I left a good many negatives after being forced to but have never been retalilated against but imagine it might happen someday.I have over 3,500 positives with only 3 negatives so I'm not to worried.....Todd
