It's Nice To Be Back

>Not that anyone has missed me, but I missed all of you. (I'm mainly a reader, but I do chime in once in a while.)

Anyway, I've been away because on 23 December I was on my way back to bed (after having to get up in the wee hours) when quite suddenly I was on the floor, in a wonderful amount of pain, and with my lower right leg bent where it shouldn't have been bent. The orthopod said I had a "spontameous" fracture of the tibia and fibula; but before that the ER doc said I had "splintered" the tibia. Aftet some tests it appears I am an anomaly: I'm a middle aged man with "severe" osteoporosis.

Anyway, I'm back home now, and with access to a computer I'm having a good time catching up on everything that's gone on around here. When I couldn't visit this site I realized how much I enjoy reading everyones' posts. Now that I can again visit all of you, I'm sure my recovery time will go much faster.

>Alan,

I am sorry to hear of your misfortune. Sounds scary. Now than, we all know that osterioprosoysis(sp) is more commonly a problem that the ladies have to deal with in the older years if they don't take the necessary preventative measures in the younger years, such as prober diet and weight-bearing exercise. Do tell us more about what the Doc's told you as you may be able to help others prevent the same misfortune as you.

Briddle bones, arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh, scary. Heal up, be careful, and do what the Doc's tell you to do.

>All,

Thanks for all of your good wishes.

As for treatment and prognosis, as I understand it there is no cure, easy or otherwise, for osteoporosis. The usual preventatives are to have enough calcium in your diet and to exercise. Apparently stressing the bones through exercise helps to keep them strong.

I'm still an anomoly though: I exercise regularly and I met or exceeded the daily dose for calcium. So much for modern medicine. Right now I'm in a hip to toe cast, taking a calcium supplement and a drug called "fosamax" that's supposed to help. Other than waiting to see if the bones heal up in the usual way, there's apparently nothing to done right now.

Thanks again for all good vibes. I appreciate them very much.
