Power sharpening

Jim in Burlington

>I bought some carving chisels last year and for christmas I recieved a 1" belt sander/sharpening tool. I am having a problem getting the LV honing compound to take to the belt. I carged the belt with bar soap and compound several times but the compound seems to do nothing and turn to dust. I have use both sides of the belt figuring maybe I used the wrong one. Any help would be appreciated thanks Jim

>you mean the beltsander/grinder?

It should have to turn to both sides is my opinion if using it for chisels.

I am opting for a reversable switch because I have a -european- 380V motor on it.

Most honing compounds use a wax (petroleum) based binder...as does ours.

If you put some mineral oil on it, it will soften up, and will stick better.

If you're using a leather belt, rough it up a bit with some sandpaper, and it will take (and hold) the honing compound more easily.

>Has anyone ever tried a 1"x93" sanding belt on a bandsaw to begin sharpening, then move to stone? My bandsaw came with one, but I can't find replacement belts now. Sounds like it "might" work.

>Ah com'on Rob--you know it's considered wimpy in Canada to put on gloves before it gets to at least -50, although a coat is OK if it gets below -30---I mean heck--I was wearing shorts till it hit -20 :). Yup--we're hardy up here---going swimming in the river out back this afternoon---just need it to warm up to say -15 and then I'll be good to go---now where did I put that axe and my furlined swim trunks.....

>If you`re talking about the blackflies, you could put those things in straitjackets and they`d STILL find a way to get around a bite.Glad they only come around for a short time(did I manage to keep a straight face on that one?).

Mainely,Bob-Who`ll start to worry when the "palmeto beetles" start vacationing up here.
