>I am cleaning up a recently purchased stanley doweling machine, which arrived with a bent tightening arm. It's clear that it was bent because the previous owner was not aware that the guideplate is made with a lefthand screw. Does anybody have an explanation why this application would merit lefthanded threads?

And while I am critiquing the design, is anybody else aware whether stanley ever 'updated' the guideplate with some sort of indexing marks? It seems that the user is required to eyeball the alignment of the guideplate with the axis of the cutter, which by definition undervalues the usefulness of a guideplate.

any thoughts, pondpeople?
