Converting old jack planes

PReed

>I'd like to make some round and cove planes out of some old wooden jack plane bodies that I bought. I will have to also make my own wedges and grind the blades and cap irons. What are the best shapes I can use and is it even worth the trouble? The blades and cap irons I will buy, the wedges I'll make.

>For me the time and effort it would take to change a jack into a hollow or round unless it was for a special purpose needed project just not worth it.

>David Charlesworth did something like that in order to help in the shaping of a dished bench top IIRC (a hollow I think). He gives full instructions on how he went about it in "David Charlesworth's Furnituremaking Techniques Vol 2" (I wish he'd pick a shorter title...) He seemed to think it was worth the trouble as he made two.

>If you like volume 2, then absolutely. Full of meaty goodness; plane tuning, sharpening, making woodie shaves, twisted dovetails etc etc.

Wishing she was getting commision on these book sales... ;~)
