Mortice Chisel Handle Completed

Angelo Schembari

>Well Spent last night and thismorning making a handle for the smaller of the 2 mortice chisels I have. I drilled holes and burnt it in. One small note for anyone else who does this. Stop the burining in before the handle is set deep enough. When the metal cools and shrinks, it will be set deeper. Added a leather washer and shaped with a spokeshave and rasps. Set the tang in some "fortified" epoxy (colloidal silica.) I still thing this one goes on Bob's "humble side". Maybe #2 will work out better.

>"Humbler" is when you spend a lot more time on the handle, and then don't get the tang hole quite big enough, and split the handle :^(

Ash (your's looks like ash from your photo) is a tougher, and not nearly as brittle as the purpleheart I used one one of mine.

Too big, or too small, epoxy fixes it. I'm back out to the shop now to mix up a small batch for several small projects (some of them handles) that have reached the "epoxy" stage.

Then I guess I'm Humbler as well...

Never forget how important grain orientation can be.

>Thanks for the picture. I have a couple Moulson Brothers mortise chisels and the 5/8" one has a split handle. I was thinking about filling all of the cracks with epoxy and wrapping wire around the handle but I think a new handle like yours is the correct way to go. I'm not sure how long the 5/16" chisel's handle will stand up to pounding so I might be needing two handles.
