LN in the NY Times -sort of

Verne Mattson, Northeast NJ

>As part of a continuing series on Steinway Pianos, an article in the Metro section of today's NY Times described the final construction of a $100,000 grand piano. Seems that there's lots of handwork involved at this stage of construction.

One part of the article described the fitting of the keybed, which must be slightly crowned. Quote from the article "A thin curl of wood rolled out of Mr. Farrell's $500 plane with each careful stroke."

There was a picture of Michael Farrell in the process of fitting, and on the floor below was a LN #9 Miter Plane.

How about that! List price on the LN #9 was a little off though... ;-)

Happy New Year to all!

>Maybe it's not an LN plane at all, but the rare Bridge City Tools clone of the #9 miter plane.

>Just an interesting aside, I bought 5 LN planes from someone that retired from there. They use a lot of LN stuff and do a ton of hand work.

Have a great new year.

Points for staying on topic

>Robert,

Nice to hear that there's still a role for hand work in a production setting. Seems that musical instruments lend themselves to handwork more than other production operations.

>Thanks for the heads up, Verne, I'd read one of the series a couple of months ago, didn't even know it was a series, now back to read them all.

BTW, I didn't see anything about a LN miter in the online version.

>Pam,

It was in a picture above the paragraph. From what I've seen, rarely do all pictures associated with an article make it to the online version.

I've been following the series from the beginning. It's been quite interesting. This is the first one that mentioned the use of handplanes, but I guess that makes sense because fine tuning and fitting of wood is still best handled with planes!

>Thanks, Verne. As I'm now reading the second in the series, when the spruce is picked for making the soundboard, I'm wondering who gets Steinway's rejects. Boards get rejected for the slightest blemish.
