Issues that have caused problems for those trying to login on the new forums

The "profiles" on the legacy forums were used to create "user accounts" on the new forums. This means if you have a profile, you already have an account on the new forums.

The password from your profile cannot be transferred, so you need to reset it on the new forum. The process to do so is the same as other sites use when you have forgotten your password. Here you select "Login" and then "Forgotten?"  Following is a direct link to that page

Enter your email address, which must be the one used in your profile, and it will email you a link to reset the password on the new forum.

Following that emailed link will take you to a page to reset it. Here are a few things some found confusing.

The new forums use the term "passphrase" instead of "password." They are the same thing, but a passphrase must

  • be at least 16 characters in length, and
  • contain at least one space.

We are all conditioned that passwords cannot contain a space, but here they MUST contain at least one. It confused me when I first started working with this software, so I completely understand it may have confused others and apologize for not making this more clear.

Another issue is that the new forum software has restrictions on what constitutes a valid username. Only letters, numbers, and the hyphen character are allowed, it cannot begin with a number, and there is a length restriction.

Many of the profiles imported as user accounts do not meet these restrictions; e.g., Derek Cohen (in Perth, Australia), Jim DeLaney, Austintown, Ohio, or 2Sand.

The software handles those OK internally, but it may complain if they are used to login. The workaround to that is to use your email address to login.

To recap, I think there are just two things to keep in mind if trying to use your account on the new forums:

  1. Passphrases are just long passwords that must contain at least one space, and
  2. Use your email address to login.

Entering a long password that is obfuscated by asterisks can be hard. Click the little eye icon to show what you are typing.

Afterthoughts

If your profile does not include an email (it was possible to create them on the legacy forums without specifying one), or the email is an old one you never use anymore, you will not receive an email to reset your password.

Why is this so hard?!� I will not be surprised if the forum consists of just Ellis and Peter.

Interesting Derek, and others, I suppose. I found registering simplicity itself through carefully following Peter's guidance. I started by making sure my email address was correct in the email box, then invented a pass phrase and input it. I think I had to repeat the pass phrase in a second box to confirm it, and I was in. When inventing the pass phrase I made sure there were at least sixteen letters in it plus a capital letter which I put at the beginning. Interestingly I discovered, I think, that the spaces between the words count as part of the necessary count. So, I surmise, that if your pass phrase has a count of three words amounting to fourteen letters plus the two spaces between the three words that counts as sixteen. As you can see I'm still posting under the handle of Sgian Dubh.

I suggest you try again because if I found it easy I imagine you will too with a bit of studying.

Also, I thought Peter might like to read something positive in amongst all the tales of woe regarding this migration to a new forum format. Slainte.

I used

1. The email address I was using previously: inthewoodshop@gmail.com

2. My user name changed slightly as the old one was too many letter, so: "Derek Cohen (Perth, Oz)"

3. Made up a passcode as per instructions.

The last two occasions I get:

Server is tired :(

There was an issue with usernames that were either too long or contained characters other than letters, numbers, periods, or hyphens.

As a workaround, the system always allows using your email address to log in, so that is always an option.

I think the dev has fixed this. I just logged in using both your full profile name and email address, using the passphrase I emailed. you.

Peter,

I don't know how my email has been attached to messages, nor how to make that feature switch off.  I do not want forum messages sent to my personal email: hbmxxsixtyfive...... Unsubscribe me from the general woodworking forum.

Ensure you are entering the email used in your profile.

Possible reasons for not receiving email:

1. Did not enter the email associated with your profile.

2. Typo.

3. Went to spam folder?

Oh, I see the problem now.  You do not have what these legacy forums call a "profile." That's why I posted a link to check it, to ensure it exists and lists the correct email.

Since there is no profile here, no user account was created on the new forums during the data migration.

What might make that happen is mismatched DIV tags in the post content, as the default background to this template is black. That could affect subsequent posts, but only if viewing in guestbook style.

But no, I'm not seeing that anywhere.

REMOVING THIS THREAD

I revised the "Getting Started" page so hopefully there will not be so many issues. Please suggest any changes you think should be made.

Meanwhile, because this is a site about woodworking and not site development, too many posts about how much readers do not like it does not leave a good impression on new visitors. And topics about problems that have been fixed is confusing to anyone new and really a waste of their time.

Hence, they have no historical value, and will be deleted once the issue(s) have been resolved. At least removed from public view.

Nothing in these forums will change, and I stopped doing any development on it last year. The three legacy forums--Woodworking, Hand Tools, and Turning--will remain as-is for any who prefer it, and new posts made to them are migrated to the new system twice a day--noon and midnight. However, new posts made on the new forums are NOT migrated to these old forums. It is not possible to do that, so you will have check the new site to see any new topics and replies made there.

The alternative would be to set a hard date to discontinue these old scripts and redirect the links to them to the new site. That is how most sites do it, but I don't see any harm in keeping them available.
