Sometimes I may be too verbose in trying to over-explain things. To describe is as simple as I can...

IF YOU HAVE A PROFILE ON THE LEGACY FORUMS you already have a user account on the new forums. Ideally, it would have been nice to just use the passwords associated with the existing PROFILES, but that is not possible. So, the passwords for the USER ACCOUNTS must be reset, and the process is the same as most other sites to change a password. (Ever see a little option when logging in that says "Forgot password"?) The new forums use the term "passphrase" instead of "password" so go to

Passphrase reset (you can always get to this page by clicking "Forgotten" on the log-in page)

and enter the email associated with your existing PROFILE. You will receive an email, and follow the link in to to reset the password.

You should then be able to LOGIN to the NEW forums using the EMAIL and PASSPHRASE you just set.

Passphrases are just passwords, only longer. They must be at least 16 characters and must contain at least one space. Just pick something easy for you to remember. Examples

  • Every moment is a fresh beginning.
  • Never regret anything that made you smile.
  • Dream as if you'll live forever, live as if you'll die today.
  • All limitations are self-imposed.
  • Life is like riding a bicycle.
  • You can tune a piano but you can't tuna fish.
  • aaaa bbbb cccc dddd
  • 1111 2222 3333 4444
  • bacon! bacon! bacon! bacon!

If the above does not work, simply STOP and don't get frustrated. It may not be you but bugs in how the PROFILES were converted into USER ACCOUNTS. If you have time and are so inclined, it is helpful if you can describe what did not work. For example, I suspect there may be issues with profile names that contain special characters (commas, parentheses, etc.) as they are not allowed in USER ACCOUNT names on the NEW forums. For this reason, although the log-in pages say you can log in using your username or email, it may be best to always use your email.

I've followed the instructions for changing the password for the new forum, apparently without luck. Each time I try, it's not accepted. My PW generator uses special characters, so I can't use it. I tried using just alpha and numeric characters with no luck. Then I tried all alpha characters with no luck. I'm also using 16 characters as specified. I'm stumped. So I tried to put this post in feedback however being in the new format, I couldn't as it responded with I didn't have a unique ID.

Make sure the "passphrase" has at least one space in it.

If you don't want to mess with this, just email me (from my profile) using the email address in your profile, and I'll do it. Then, all you have to do is login using your email and the passphrase I'll provide you when I reply to your email. (You can change your passphrase once logged in.)

I had no trouble migrating & signing in, BUT I can't find any place to set preferences. It seems like you have to read every post in order. I have always used "Compressed List, Single Message, UBB Order". That way I can find threads I am interested in and the posts I want to read without wadeing through everything. Is the new format going to be a one size fits all?

Yeah, there were heated debates in the early 2000s about the "threaded v. flat" styles, and flat won out.. I'm not aware of any forum software that offers the threaded style anymore. (There is one I know of (My Little Forum), but it would not be suitable here.

Well, that was pretty simple. I had tried spaces, but must have been making other violations of the pass phrase requirements at the time.

Peter, I hate change, particularly if it's for no good reason, but I kinda like the new format. It's early, but it seems pretty straightforward and easy to use. GOOD WORK!
