Painted wood in planer question...
I have a few pieces of pine that have been painted. Does it damage planer knives to plane the paint off?

Pigments, especially Titanium Dioxide, will work to dull your steel knives. Texture and waterproofing paints are worse. Sanding most of the coating off first is a better option if you have a lot to do. 1-2 boards won't hurt [much]

There is damage and there is dulling. Also to be considered is lead paint dust. I've seen latex paint basically turn into glue with machining heat and the knives come out coated. I'm going to say not damage, but it won't do the machine much good. I'd use a good carbide scraper first to remove as much paint as possible.

The heat generated at the cutting edge will melt the paint and gunk up the cutting head. You will have a lot of cleaning to do afterward.
I was reclaiming some painted pine shelves and got the paint off with a heat gun, then sanded them. Some of the paint was semisoft from soap exposure, so no sanding. That worked but it took a lot longer than planing would.
