51/64 inch OD router guide busuing

I'm sure I'm not the only one with one of these; mine comes in a set of eight made by Rigid. The question is: what is the use for such a weird fraction? I called a tech rep at Woodcraft, who had NO idea.

The only thing I can think of is that with this bushing you could get an insert to fit purposefully a tiny bit loose-- say for a router plate. Is there some secret, besides this idea, that we should know about for the use of this bushing?

Re: 51/64 inch OD router guide busuing

Forty years ago when plastic laminate countertops and cabinet doors were common I could have used one that size. When used with a 3/4" bit it would leave a an overhang of less than a 1/32, which would remove the bulk of the waste. After that a laminate bit with a 7 or 12 degree bevel would do the final trim.

Another thought is that 51/64" is only a few thousandths different from 20 millimeters. Could the bearing kit be so "assorted" that it contains both metric and inch sizes?

It's a hair over 20mm.  Does that do anything for you?  I looked at a bunch of sets and Rockler seems to be the only one that has it.

Very interesting! And yes, my kit has one 0.400 inch metric bushing.

MIne isn't Rockler; it's made by Rigid. And , Woodcraft sell it also.

Eliot, does the Inside diameter of the bushing accept a 3/4" bit? Maybe that's your answer.

No, the inside diameter is less than 3/4. But suppose it did, what would that imply?

Would you be good enough to explain the geometry more? A 3/4 inch bit will not fit inside this bushing.

I can't remember if that is for a stair template or door jig

Porter-Cable used to make a butt hinge routing jig, wondering if this bushing is specifically for that and others like it.

Apparently, you are correct.
