Interesting SawStop/Riving knife Problem
I have a Sawstop PCS 3 hp TS I got at a freight auction. I was cutting some tapers using an aluminum tapering jig and fired the cartridge. That is not what this is about but I thought it had an effect for a while. A week or two later I tried to cut a rabbet with it and the piece ran into the riving knife. I fiddled around trying to set the spacing to the cartridge. Then I got the manual out and read the riving knife is adjustable and went to work on that after reading enough to know it possible to cut rabbets with the riving knife installed. Yes, you can adjust the riving knife but you have to have a double jointed left arm. After much fiddling I decided to start all over. Took off the old used blade and reinstalled the actual Sawstop blade that came with the saw. Reset the gap to the brake. And, lo and behold, the riving knife was fine. Baffled. Removed the Sawstop blade and measured the diameter. 9 15/16" Checked it against the old blade I had been trying to use and that blade measured 9 1/2". No wonder the riving knife seemed to be too tall. Who ever heard of a 9 1/2" blade? No name on it, carbide teeth. No idea where I got it or how long I have had it. The reason I mentioned firing the cartridge, I thought it might have knocked thigs out of position. lThat was an hour I will never get back.
