The bark doesn't usually crumble. If it seems a bit loose, a little thin super glue does the trick. I turn a fair umber of natural edge vessels with the bark on, and the same applies. Something that's kind of nice is to brush some BLO onto the bark; it darkens it beautifully.

Derek, Look up Paraloid B-72. Comes out of GB is used by archeologists to stabilize fossils and fragile items. It gets dissolved in acetone or alk and is painted on to plasticize an otherwise crumbly material. I use it on bark edges and sections of turnings that would otherwise fall away or go airborne.

Interesting Mark. Can use use it punky wood as well?

Not as hard as penetrating epoxy but finishes off well enough. Haven't used it in structural situation yet.
