What is the gestation period of an 80 inch table?

At least  14 months. I started cutting wood for this piece in April of 2022. Design discussions began in October 2021.

Client is due to pick this up this evening.

Time well spent

I love the lazy susan styling -- great for sharing a meal with a bunch of friends. I'm betting your client has a huge dining room.

Are the benches the only seating? What's the finish? Does everything knock down for transit?

Where Does Arthur Sit?

Didn't see how you keep the satellites "registered" to the  center round.

You're obviously having fun.

With a lumpy shop floor, how do you get everything flat on the same plane?

I understand he does. He will send my pictures after everything is set up


Are the benches the only seating? 


No, I was going to make eight chairs too-but we realized that time wouldn't allow the completion of chairs-The client purchased 6 chairs from a company that is well equipped to produce chairs.


What's the finish? 
Every surface has a coat of General Finishes Brown Mahogany Gel stain-chosen by the client.  ALL the bases and legs and the bench seats are finished in Zinsser Amber Shellac-brushed on. The table tops were first sealed with a spray coat of Zinsser Sealcoat tinted with Transtint Liquid dye stain. I believe it was a combination of "Medium Brown" and Reddish Brown". The table tops were then top coated with sprayed General Finishes Satin Water based Urethane .


Does everything knock down for transit?
Not really. The bases for the benches and Satellite tables are glued together. The bench seats are screwed to the bench bases and the Satellite Table tops are screwed to their tripod bases. I elongated the holes in these applications to allow for seasonal movement-but I built this in Michigan before our humidity rises and the pieces are going to Utah where I believe will have an over dryer climate.

I do NOT ugh. The base of the main table is in fact my favorite part and as I said in the video it will be covered by a forest of Satellite table legs.
Here is the final center table design.

The goal was to have the inside radius of the Satellite tables match the outside radius of the Main table-(80" diater so a 40" radius.) But The center table has to turn and I needed a gap between the tables so the finishes wouldn't wear off and so the turning top would not encounter any resistance. I was aiming for a 1/8th inch gap but the client wasn't concerned about that tight  tolerance- I believe the gap averages @1/4". That gap is produced by the fact that each Sat Table was sized to touch its two neighboring tables.








The client will not always have all four tables set in place. He will have some set off to the side but bring them into the full set as dinner party numbers require.

Crossed my fingers on this one. Once the main table was finished. I took multiple floor to table top height readings-Then built the Satellite Tables to accommodate that height which I believe was 31.25"---- a bit higher than many dining tables but my client is well over six feet and he said his family is tall so a higher than average table height was encouraged.
