That would be "kauri"
The guy who started selling it about 30 years ago sent me several turning blanks. I must say, it is really boring: soft, no pronounced grain, no figure at all. Imagine aged poplar.

From what I've seen, seems there's a big difference between the "young" (3-6,000years) and the really old (30-40k in the swamps) wood, with some very figured and colored slabs. What I saw (had a Kiwi client) was far out of my price range.

Years ago I made a trade with Alby Hall of New Zealand who works at the Ancient Kauri Kingdom. With the trade piece he sent a small blank about 6 X 4 and on it were written all these numbers. These numbers when plugged into the global system showed on the map places like the Kauri Kingdom, Alby's home and where this piece of carbon dated wood (35,000 years old) came out of the ground. There was a place I believe it was in Wisconsin where they sold Kauri, went there after the Minneapolis Symposium and I bought 4 small slabs (I have them secreted away) for more than a few dollars. It is nice to hand a visitor to my place and hand them this piece of Kauri that is 35,000 years old as how many can say that they have held something that old.
