Anybody use a track saw to cut stair stringers?
I am rebuilding my son's garage steps and have to cut a couple of stringers. Been a long time. I was thinking it might be useful to use the track saw but not sure it's worth it.

I've done a couple when I was building decks. For marking I have 2 gadgets that attach to the framing square. That establishes a repeatable depth and height. I then use the circular saw to make most of the cut. I then use a sabre saw to finish the cut. I cut one stringer then use it as a template to mark the other stringer. Doing it that way compensates for any inaccuracies in marking or cutting the first stringer.

Barry, Sounds like you are asking the wrong question. Maybe............... "I want to buy a track saw. Is cutting stair stringers a good enough reason to tell my significant other that I need one?"

Joe, I have a track saw, actually two of them, and I think I have figured out how to use a short track to cut stair stringers. As Ralph pointed out I have done it that way long years ago, with a Skilsaw and a framing square. I used to be that if you could lay out stairs and rafters you could call yourself a carpenter. I have done both, many times, in my youth. What I was trying to learn this time, is there an easier way to do it with a track saw. I am gathering the final numbers now and will give it a try in a day or two. I think the track will improve both speed and accuracy.

Oh! I understand. I scoffed at anything Festool until my friend helped me purchase three tools at an estate sale for the price of one. The 55 mm track saw and a 1400 router and a 6" rotex sander. I reach for the sander and router nearly every day and they are my go to tools. I have no quite fallen under the spell of the track saw as much but it can be very useful at times. I also have a Domino I bought second hand and two shop vacs one of which came from an estate. The shop vac is the only one I bought new. I like them all and am glad to have them. Buy once, Cry once. Now there are lots of other track saws out there now and some are quite good. My understanding is the Makita one is serious competition for the Festool. And then there are some cheap ones.
