My Stubby came with a multi-v belt that's been running just fine for 20 years.  All the other belt driven machines in my shop run link belts (Fenner drives) including the 3-belt cabinet saw.  They are smoother, don't have a memory, and are quieter than notched belts which I replaced.

I have replaced most of the V-belts in my machines that use them with link belts.  My table saw belt is 30 years old and holding up fine.  Right now, my tablesaw, bandsaw, drill press and Stubby lathe all have link belts.

I do a lot of business with places such as motion industries and others for farm related issues. They deal exclusively with belts, chains, bearings and other components like this. They have charts that prove a notched belt is capable of transmitting if I remember correctly 25 or 30% more power than a normal belt as long as drive and driven pulleys are same size and condition. Naturally larger pulleys have longer surface areas to take advantage of increased contact area for more ideal performance.

If you are changing it on a lathe, a link belt can be a real time-saver since you don't have to remove the spindle to put it on. Cut the old one off. I use one on my tablesaw and bandsaw.

I think the notched belt is an advantage if it needs to go around a small diameter pulley since it will "bend" easier. and I don't think there are any disadvantages. But the link-belt would be my choice for a lathe for the reason above.

Than for all the replies!  After more examination I  found the headstock bearing end replacement also!  The PD Blaster has been brought  out and the repair is started!
