You may have been following my under bench cabinet with eight drawers project. Today I made the third of these drawers. I thought I would make things easier on myself and did this one using the French dovetail method. BIG MISTAKE IN SOFT WOOD! If you think about it, the sliding dovetails that go vertically through the back and front of the drawers leave short grain. And when you slide the male part of the sliding dovetails into these sockets, the short grain tends to snap off. OUCH!
I'll glue them up anyway and try to fix the mistakes. But I had a bad day.
Have you ever noticed that when things start to go bad, it seems to get worse and worse in a hurry.
Yup. I had a small leak in the copper drain line that goes from the kitchen sink to the main drain in the basement. The drain line is about 2" in diameter. Both ends attach to rubber couplings. I have arthritis so did not want to do the job where I would have to work in a confined area in the sink cabinet. I described the problem on 2 local plumber's websites. I also left phone messages on 2 other plumbers websites. None of the 4 contacted me so I was forced to do the job myself. I figured that I could remove the leaking pipe section and with it as a model, make a new section in plastic pipe. The first problem I ran into was removing the leaking pipe section. It would not come out. The section hit the house structure. I had to cut an 8" long piece from the end that was under the kitchen sink. I then got it out. The section is about 3 feet long with a 30 degree angle fitting in the middle and a right angle fitting at one end. I went to Home Depot and bought a piece of 1 1/2" plastic pipe, a 90 degree rubber coupling, a straight rubber coupling, a 90 degree fitting, primer and adhesive. The 90 degree rubber coupling was to replace the 30 degree fitting. They did not have a 30 degree fitting. I prefabbed the entire section and then cut off an 8" piece. I thought that I could just slip the new section into place. No so easy. The coupling made the section too large to slip through the holes in the floor and kitchen cabinet. I enlarged the hole in the kitchen cabinet with a hand held scroll saw. That cut went easy. The cutting of the hole in the floor did not go so easy. I had to do it from the basement using a cordless drill with 2 1' extensions and a 2 1/2" hole saw. The hole saw bounced around forever before it started cutting. Finally I was ready to slip the prefabbed pip section into place. Also not so easy. The 90 degree coupling made alignment with 2 1/2" hole ( it was 1 1/2' away from me) very difficult. Finally I succeeded in slipping the to prefabbed section into place. I then connected the bottom of the section to the rubber coupling in the basement and then went to the kitchen. I connected the 8" section with a rubber coupling and then connected the other end of the 8" coupling to the rubber fitting in the sink cabinet. There was a small leak so I tightened he rubber coupling hose clamps a little bit more and thankfully the leak stopped. This simple repair took me about 3 hours of no fun work. As soon as my back recovers I will make something to cover up the section removed with the scroll saw and also replace the piece of sheetrock in the basement ceiling.
