Here are some picture from the sideboard/bookshelf. I got some good advice regarding the design from Woodcentral members - thanks.
As there are few angels that are 90 degres I have to relay on Sketchup for length, angles and where to route grooves for the loose tenons. That went surprisingly good. I had more difficulties when routing the grooves. I made a dussin errors, wrong position, wrong side and.... Next time I shall mark the boards more clearly and triple check before routing.
I had a some doubt wether I should finish it or not - finally I decided to let it be....
I like this piece a lot, Svante--thanks for posting. Your designs are refreshingly original and also very pleasing to the eye. The doors especially add interesting visual texture and tie the piece together without distracting from the objects that are being displayed. The workmanship is cleanly done, too. Nice job!
There is a certain genius to this piece. There is no pattern repeat anywhere, including the textured panel faces. All seven verticals differ. And yet—put it all together and the whole is happy and relaxed, all tension contained.
What about the black holes/pulls at upper left/right of each panel. What do they do?
The doors are made of one solid or book matched board. I band saw them in strips of eg 22, 23, 24, 25, and 26 mm. Then they are milled to final size, 1 mm narrower. I mark the height of the cubes, also progressive and randomly decide the thickness; 16, 18 or 20mm. Each cube with a thickness of 16 and 18 mm is then routed. As the cubes are diamond formed the fence is set to 4 degrees. Every cube is sanded and the strips glued (sparsely as it is difficult to clean the excess). The hinges are of pivot type. The pull is finally dovetailed in the door.
Wow! I like it! What a piece of work! Question...my Engineering Brain kicked in and want to know if the sections with doors have backs on them to resist racking and settling. I am a little concerned about the center three bays sagging toward the center somewhere down the road.
