Building a place to store my socks- dovetailing the case
I do tails first. I shall not tell why, for why for me may not be why for you. Try both ways and make your choice. I have settled on two sizes of dovetails, one large for cases and a second for drawers.
I experimentally lay out the the number of tails using the width of either the top or bottom panel as “scrap paper”. I diddle with the number of tails till the spacing looks right.
The nifty gauge shown in Picture 1 is used to make the tail board saw lines.

I have two gages, one for drawers and one for case pieces, varying by the pin size and width of half pin. The pin size is chosen to be just slightly bigger than some size chisel I own. The distance from the end of the plastic to the end of the gauge is the half pin width at each side of the panel. The end of the gauge is indexed from each edge of the panel and a mark made aligned with the end of the plastic (Picture 1).
The remaining space is divided into equal portions with dividers. The prick of the divider leg locates the center of the pin hole (Pictures 2 and 3). If someone does not know how to do this division, ask and I will explain.

The slot in the plastic is centered on the pricks from laying out the pin centers and a line drawn to mark the location of the saw kerfs.
Tails are sawn and waste chiseled away. The tail board is now used to mark the location of the pins on the case sides. No effort is to be spared here to ensure the tail board is lined up with the case side correctly. An error made at this point can’t be fixed. If the tail board is not exactly aligned with the scribe line on the case side the dovetails will not fit and/or the case fronts and sides will not line in the same plane (the case will be twisted).
In my situation one of the sides was cupped some and I had to rig a batten to mash it flat. The bar clamp across the top holds a stick that indexes the case top to the side (Picture 4). Pin board is sawed and, waste chiseled away.

As shown in Picture 5 the boundary between what was sawed and what is being chiseled is apparent. Chiseling is complete when there is no step at this boundary. After chiseling out the waste I do a test fit. I like to see the case top or bottom easily begin to seat on the pins and begin to close with thumps from my palm. If the joint is coming together well I do not further seat it at this point.
