For smaller amounts of removal like for a drawer I prefer routing the end grain for several reasons.  But end grain cutting is slow if there is much expanse of it.  For these big tail sockets I may find it compelling to route the long grain with side on end.  I need to see how much faster long grain routing is on some test pieces tomorrow.
