ridiculous price for wood product

My son said in his area lumber prices have come down enough that he is going ahead building a garage/shop so I was completely flummoxed when I wanted to get an ordinary 7/16 wood dowel and was told that the price was $6.99 before tax. Needless to say it is still there. Do you folks notice such outrageous prices of similar things or is it just ACE hdwe in WY?

How much would you charge if you were running a hardware store in WY, with not a tree in sight?
In Montreal, a 7/16 x 48" sells for CDN$1.59 at a a real lumber store, $3.59 at my local HomeDepot. I would have to drive about 40 kilometers to save the $2.

Sure, that is a bit high, but not what I would call ridiculous from a retailer - unlike the $20 2x4's of recent record.
I recently paid $10 at the Ace hardware for a Dremel flap sander because I wanted to try it out before ordering a whole mess of them for $30 from China. It did the job so I ordered a bunch. The price of doing business I figured.
So yeah, that price is high if you are going to be buying them often. Its not so big a deal if you need one $7 dowel every 10 years.

given that it's in WY, they probably figure two things:
1) there's not many places to get the same thing
2) there won't be enough customers to turn them over faster and make any money
So you get expensive or nothing. Just a guess.
If the store is independent with an ace label (don't know how those work - if they're like the do-it-best kind of thing where the stores are independently owned), then can choose to do it however they want.
You can always ask if they'll do half of the sticker, never hurts. If they don't, then internet's your uncle.

I did, but my first instinct was to save time. something we all may fall into at times.
