I don't know what this is technically called (fungus?), but should I be concerned about this growing at the bottom.

The tree is nearing 100 years old. The person who I bought the house from said her dad planted that tree when the house was built in the early 1920's.

I had an arborist come out last winter and trim some dead branches out. He would only do it during non-growth season because of oak wilt as I recall. He said the tree was in good shape.

I know these fungus things are common, see them all the time, just not sure if it's a sign of something bad or not.

I am not an expert, but I believe that fungus means something is decaying inside the tree. That is in effect the "blossom" of the hidden activity. Trees don't heal, they seal. Maybe you can treat the wound with something like BoraCare to arrest the rot long enough for the tree to seal over the wound.

I have trees with many of these fungi. All have damage, through the bark and inside.

Not what you wanted to hear, but every red oak I've seen with those mushrooms coming up around the base has ended up dying in fairly short order. Maybe it's just coincidence. I'd talk to an arborist, but I'm not optimistic about the prognosis.

Uhg, hope you are wrong. I was told that tree would cost 8-9000 to remove because of its location. It would require a crain and so on.

I called the arborist. He is due to stop by next week.

Bugs and crud is my weak suit.

What I do know is that there are few fungus growths found on trees that are good news.

Occasionally the tree can grow over the decayed portion. This isn't done by scattering fertilizer like a potted plant of the turf.

If the tree is growing far from a target you may consider having the canopy removed and leave the trunk/branches for wildlife habitat.

Before a removal is planned a diagnosis should be done. Using a shovel or even doing a root crown excavation with an Air Spade or Air Knife to see what is going on would be in order.

Don't rely only on a diagnosis by Internet.
