OT Graco Magnum X5 paint sprayer

Mike L

Awhile ago I asked about paint sprayers that could spray lacquer and latex. I figured I am better off getting two different sprayers. I bought a Graco Magnum X5 with a 515 tip to spray the walls and ceiling of the mobile I am redoing.

I have a mix of old and new sheet rock to cover. I figured I would use Kiltz to prime everything ceilings and walls. All the cabinets vanities toilets etc are out and there is no floor coverings right now. So it is pretty much a shell.

So on to my question. Is the 515 tip big enough to spray Kiltz or do I have to thin it?

Also which Kiltz should I use? A mix of old and new sheetrock on walls and ceilings. I am going to be using a latex paint to finish it off.

Thanks

Mike

I think Kilz Original primer recommends a 519.

Even with that tip it needs to be thinned about 10%.

After spraying it should be rolled anyway

I would just roll it.

Edit.

I looked up the specs for the X5.

Don't waste your time.

A 515 tip should handle Kilz just fine without thinning—that’s the whole point of an airless sprayer. It’s not a big tip by any means, so it will be slow, but that may be a good thing if you don’t have a lot of experience behind a sprayer. A 519 tip is likely too big for that sprayer.

That said, is there a reason you’re wanting to use Kilz? New drywall should really get a drywall primer, not just an “all-in-one” primer. Something that has a higher solids content in it to help hide the difference in texture between the drywall paper and the joint compound. Do you have stains to seal on the existing walls? If not, you’re better off just cleaning and running a sanding pole over the walls before applying two finish coats of a good quality paint (from a paint store, not a big box).

Old paint and stains

Mike L

the drywall I am leaving has old paint and stains on it. I am thinking the Kiltz will give me an even base coat to apply the finish paint on. I am going to use Sherwin Williams paint for the finish. Just not sure which one yet, depends on what they have or can get in stock.

I am going to try and clean the stains off first, but looking at them I doubt they will come off.

I have used an airless sprayer before to spray a metal roof on my old house. I will play in a closet and figure out the sprayer and what to do.

I might do Kiltz on the old drywall and a good drywall primer on the new. The main living area is all new drywall, the bedrooms and such are a mix.

Thanks
